Maarten Vermote was a Bordurian half-blood wizard that served within the Thracian Rangers, working as a trained soldier of their armed militia. Having been left feeling disgraced after the government that led his homeland attempted to annex the Kingdom of Syldavia without success, Vermote was later recruited into the ranks of the Zyldav Zentral Revolutzionär Komitzät - the shadow organisation that had been the secret force behind the aforementioned coup - as a sympathiser to their ideals. One of the various disgruntled adolescents that been enlisted to the Thracian Rangers, Vermote and his allies became involved with various transactions between themselves, and the criminal enterprises led by Cirano Montani. However, although the Shotgun - as Montani was otherwise known by - supplied their operations with munitions and hardware, the real purpose of the Thracians was to provide a smokescreen for the Z.Z.R.K. Remnants that had begun to rebuild their former strength within the Rosfail Expanse. Sponsored by such benefactors, Maarten Vermote assisted the paramilitary force with their efforts to destabilise the presence of the Syldavian government along the border of the Expanse, allowing their patrons to further grow their operations for a fresh insurrection with the Rangers at the front to serve as shock troops.
